Joel and David Amwayi: A Community of Hope

John Amwayi was once a well-known mason in Bungoma County. He lived in Marell Village and took pride in working hard to provide for his family.

In 2018, disaster struck when he lost his eyesight. Not long after, he also lost his wife. This left him alone to raise his three children, two boys and a daughter. His daughter was born after he became blind. He knows her only by her voice.

Despite his blindness and grief, John remained determined. He wanted to give his children a better future. He worked tirelessly to support them through primary school.

In 2025, his two sons, Joel and David, sat for their Grade 9 examinations. They performed well and earned placements in Kamusinga School and Lwandanyi Secondary School respectively.

It was a moment of joy and pride for John. However, it also brought deep worry. He knew that without support, paying for senior school would be impossible.

This is where the community stepped in. A concerned member of the village reached out to Obuyanzi Foundation’s founder, Pamela Mactolo. They asked for her intervention and support.

Through an impromptu fundraiser, Pamela was able to raise KES 80,000 for the boys.

Today, Joel and David are doing well in school. They are hopeful and excited about their future.

John may never literally see his sons walk into school. Yet, through the kindness of a supportive community, he knows their future is secure.

John Amwayi’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience and the strength of community. Even after losing his sight and his wife, he refused to give up on his children’s future. Through determination, love, and timely support, Joel and David are now pursuing their education with hope and confidence. This story reminds us that when a community comes together, even the darkest moments can lead to brighter futures.
